NIMBY

NIMBY, also known in Poland as "not in my garden" - commonly denotes the attitude of people who express their opposition to certain investments in their immediate neighborhood, although they do not deny that they are needed at all. They are behind them, but in a completely different place, away from their homes. This applies in particular to burdensome investments such as the construction of highways, railway lines, sewage treatment plants or waste dumps. Opposition also causes investments which, in their opinion, can contribute to a decrease in the level of security in the area, eg after the establishment of a rehabilitation center for drug addicts or clinics for AIDS patients. Opposition to such investments is also concerned with the fact that their creation will result in a decline in property prices. The opposite of NIMBY is YIMBY.
