Otto, Otton, Odo, Odon - male of Germanic origin. In Old English, they were written as Audo, Odo, Oddo, Oto, Otto, Hotto. Derived from the German word audha. It could also be a shortening of old Germanic names such as Audobercht, Audomar, Otmar, Otfried, Otokar. Popular in the Middle Ages, it was worn by many German emperors and princes of the Ludolfing dynasty. In Polish it appeared at the dawn of its history, because in 1000 the then Prince Boleslaw called his son so. In the earliest records appeared forms Otto and Oto, later also Hoto and Hotto. The Otton version, also used in the Odon version, was developed under the influence of Latin in the form of an inflectional variant. Otto's name day celebrates: January 16, June 19, July 1, July 4 and November 18.
