Palinurus

Palinurus - a figure from Roman mythology, the helmsman of the ship Aneas. As Aeneas sailed from Sicily to Italy, Venus foretold that the fleet would reach its destination safely, but at the expense of one man's life. During the voyage Palinurus fell asleep at the helm and fell into the sea. After three days, he managed to sail to the shores of Lukania, but was killed there by the natives. His body was abandoned without a burial on the sea shore, so the soul could not go through the Styx and leave peacefully to the underworld. After descending to the Underworld, he met the Palinurus soul, asking him for a burial. Accompanied by heroes, Sybilla assured the helmsman that Lukan's lands would be plagued by them, and that they would bury him and give him divine worship. The name Palinurus was later called the cape on which he died. Footnotes ... Palinurus – postać z mitologii rzymskiej, sternik statku Eneasza. Gdy Eneasz odpływał z brzegów Sycylii w kierunku Italii, Wenus przepowiedziała iż flota bezpiecznie dotrze do celu, jednak za cenę życia jednego człowieka. Eneasz po zejściu do Podziemi spotkał duszę Palinurusa, proszącą go o godny pochówek. Towarzysząca herosowi Sybilla zapewniła sternika, iż na ziemie Lukanów spadnie zaraza, na skutek której sami go pogrzebią i oddadzą mu cześć boską. Imieniem Palinurusa nazwano później przylądek, na którym zginął. Przypisy...
