Poilu

Poilu

Poilu - the name of a soldier of the French Army during the First World War. The term comes from the word poile and comes from the fact that some soldiers during the war did not shave, so they have lush beard and mustache, the term was accepted for all those who fought during the war. The typical appearance of the poil was widely used in the French propaganda of war, and also placed on wartime monuments. The stereotypical poil was described as a brave and brave, but often undisciplined soldier. This was in some way perpetuated by the French command, with the start of a major revolt against the offensive tactics led by Robert Nivelle in 1917. Lazare Ponticelli, who died at Le Kremlin-Bicêtre on March 12, 2008 at the age of 110, was the last survivor. Poilu – określenie żołnierza piechoty armii francuskiej podczas I wojny światowej.
