Racemic mixture, racemate - equimolar mixture of enantiomers of a given chemical compound. In the case of biologically active compounds, the racemic mixture often has different properties from the individual enantiomers, which can sometimes have negative consequences, as was the case with thalidomide. For this reason, any chiral chemical that is to be used as a medicine must be separated into enantiomers and each of the enantiomers must be individually subjected to clinical trials. The racemic mixture is denoted in the formulas and names of the compounds by the symbol as a substituent as a prefix of the name, for example: -vinylic acid. This is a short acronym for racemic words, a racemic mixture. In the past, it used to refer to other racemates, such as: -tartaric acid, D-, L-tartaric acid and lithic acid. However, because of the multitude of these symbols, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry recommends the use of abbreviations. The incident optical rotation of the racemic mixture is always 0 °.

Mieszanina racemiczna, racemat – równomolowa mieszanina pary enancjomerów danego związku chemicznego. W przypadku związków posiadających aktywność biologiczną mieszanina racemiczna wykazuje często odmienne właściwości od poszczególnych enancjomerów, co czasami może powodować negatywne konsekwencje, tak jak to było w przypadku talidomidu. Z tego względu, współcześnie każdy chiralny związek chemiczny, który ma być zastosowany jako lek, musi zostać rozdzielony na enancjomery i działanie każdego z enancjomerów musi być osobno poddane testom klinicznym. Mieszaninę racemiczną oznacza się współcześnie we wzorach i nazwach związków symbolem umieszczonym jak podstawnik jako prefiks nazwy, np.: kwas -winowy. Jest to skrót słów racemat, mieszanina racemiczna. Dawniej stosowało się do oznaczenia racematów inną symbolikę np. kwas -winowy, kwas D,L-winowy i kwas -winowy, jednakże właśnie ze względu na mnogość tych symboli Międzynarodowa Unia Chemii Czystej i Stosowanej zaleca stosowanie skrótu. Wypadkowa skręcalność optyczna mieszaniny racemicznej wynosi zawsze 0°.
