radula

grate

Tarka

Grater, radula - characteristic chitinous fold at the bottom of molluscum throat covered with transverse rows of chitinous teeth, moved by a complicated system of muscles. Used to tear pieces of food, scrape and crush it. The cartilage of the grating is covered with a membrane. The tops of the teeth are directed backwards. Teeth are often saturated with mineral compounds, such as magnetite. Broken teeth fall out and are replaced by new ones, growing steadily from behind. The presence of the grater is a synapomorphic feature of molluscs, a secondary disappearance in molluscs and some representatives of other clusters, others significantly modified. The shape of the grater and the number of teeth depend on the food preferences of each species and their taxonomic features. Footnotes ... Przypisy...
