Stratocumulus

Stratocumulus, Sc, cumulus-layered cloud, cumulus-layered cloud - cloud in the form of a gray layer or many lobes that are usually flattened. It is composed of drops of clouded water. Sometimes it is accompanied by slight rainfall or virga. Usually occurs below 2400 m. Layered structure is often associated with temperature inversion above the apex. Stratocumulus was introduced by German physicist and meteorologist Ludwig Kaemt in 1840 to designate a cloud that is not flat enough to be called a stratus but is not sufficiently convex to be called cumulus. Huge stratocumulus areas are located climateally on the eastern part of the oceans in moderate latitudes. The most famous example of such a cloud system is the clouds on the California coast in the USA. The largest stratocumulus area in the world is the Pacific coast in Chile and Peru. Statistically around 1/5 of the globe is covered with stratocumulus - therefore stratocumulus is the dominant formation of clouds on Earth.
