WHAT DOES ABACÁ MEAN IN PORTUGUESE?

Abaca

Abacá, also known as manila hemp, manzanilla hemp, alvacá, rope banana, banana tree and bandala is a type of banana tree that also provides one of the most important raw materials for the cordage. Its fruits are not edible. With the fibers extracted from it, cables are used all over the world to tie the ships in the harbors. It is used in preference to any other fiber because, in addition to its enormous resistance to tension, it is hardly deteriorable under the action of water, sweet or salty. The fibers of this tropical musace are from two to four meters long and come from the petioles of its leaves. The plantation looks like a banana tree and the plants are cut by the base before they come to fruition. Abacá is also employed in the manufacture of twines, bags, fishing lines and nets, carpets, wrapping paper and paper pulp. The Philippine Islands have been, since time immemorial, the main producer center. During World War II, United States plantations in Central America, begun in the 1920s, supplied the allied market.
