Amadis de Gaula

Amadis de Gaula

Amadis de Gaula is a remarkable work of the cycle of novels of cavalry of the Iberian Peninsula of century XVI. Although it is known that the work has existed since at least the fourteenth century, the earliest known version of the work is that of Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo, printed in Castilian in 1508 and called The Four Books of Amadis de Gaula. Everything indicates, however, that the original version was Portuguese, and much earlier. Montalvo himself acknowledges having amended the first three books and only authored the fourth. The original version of Amadis de Gaula has been attributed to several Portuguese authors. The chronicle of Gomes Eanes de Azurara, written in 1454 mentions as its author one such of Vasco de Lobeira, who had been armed knight in the battle of Aljubarrota. However, other sources indicate that the author was rather João de Lobeira and not the previous one. In any case, the only complete version is that of Montalvo, which was a huge success throughout Europe, being translated into the main languages of Western Europe, as well as the original Castilian and Portuguese.
