Aniridia

Aniridia is a rare disease, which consists of the congenital lack of the iris of the eye. It can affect one eye, but more often it affects both. It is usually accompanied by other disorders such as: cataracts, glaucoma, strabismus, among others. It may also exist in parallel with other systemic changes related to the kidneys and with mental retardation. It is a congenital and hereditary disease. It is transmitted to 50% of the descendants in an autosomal dominant way. It is the result of a deletion of the PAX 6 gene, located on chromosome 11, p13, causing lack of development in the eyeball.
