Ascocarpo

Ascocarpo

Ascocarpo, or ascoma, is the name given in mycology to the fructifying body characteristic of fungi belonging to the Ascomycota phylum, which includes several lichen forming species. The sporocarps of these fungi are complex reproductive structures composed of intertwined and tightly compacted hyphae on the inner surface of which millions of ascos develop, a specific type of structure formed by reproductive cells that, when maturing, typically originate eight ascospores. In many ascomas, the ascos form a layer called a hymen or hymenial layer. As for morphology, the ascomas may be opened and in the approximate shape of a cup, closed and spherical, or pear or bottle shaped, with a small pore through which the ascospores are released. Most of the ascomas are macroscopic, the apotécios being relatively large and fleshy, while the other types are submicroscopic or microscopic, rarely exceeding the size of a grain of ground pepper. The term "ascarpus" has been deprecated by many authors in favor of the term "ascoma".
