Atlanta

Atlanta is the capital, most populous city and the main cultural, economic and political center of the North American state of Georgia. Its population, according to data from the United States Census Bureau in 2012, was 443 775 inhabitants. Its metropolitan area, called Greater Atlanta, is the ninth most populous in the country, with 5,457,831 inhabitants in 2012. It is located in Fulton County, of which the city is located. Founded in 1837 under the name of Terminus, the town was renamed Marthasville in 1843, and its name was renamed to Atlanta two years later in 1845. In 1864, it suffered from the actions of the Civil War of the United States of America, being destroyed during the development of the conflict. Atlanta was rebuilt after the war, becoming the state's capital in 1868. In its recent history, it elected its first black mayor, Maynard Jackson, in 1973, one of the first cities in the United States with such an event; and hosted the 1996 Summer Olympics. Atlanta is the primary transportation hub in the southeastern United States, with highways and railways, and well-developed air transportation. Sua região metropolitana, chamada de Grande Atlanta, é a nona mais populosa do país, com 5 457 831 habitantes em 2012. Localiza-se no Condado de Fulton, do qual a cidade é sede. Fundada em 1837 com o nome de Terminus, a localidade passou a chamar-se Marthasville em 1843, tendo seu nome sido renomeada para Atlanta dois anos depois, em 1845.
