Esquistossomose

Schistosomiasis or bilharziasis is a chronic disease caused by parasitic and multicellular flatworms of the genus Schistosoma. It is the most serious form of parasitosis by multicellular organism, killing thousands of people per year. There are six species of Schistosoma that can cause schistosomiasis in humans: S. hematobium, S. intercalatum, S. japonicum, S. malayensis, S. mansoni and S. mekongi. Of these, only S. mansoni is found on the American continent. A esquistossomose ou bilharzíase é uma doença crônica causada por platelmintos parasitas e multicelulares do gênero Schistosoma. É a mais grave forma de parasitose por organismo multicelular, matando milhares de pessoas por ano. Existem seis espécies de Schistosoma que podem causar a esquistossomose ao homem: S. hematobium, S. intercalatum, S. japonicum, S. malayensis, S. mansoni e S. mekongi. Destas, apenas S. mansoni é encontrada no continente americano.
