Candombe

Candombe has played a significant role in the culture of Uruguay for the past two hundred years and was recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage. And a cultural manifestation originated from the arrival of African slaves. To a lesser extent, there are Candombe manifestations in Brazil and Argentina. In Argentina it can be found in Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, Paraná, Salta and Corrientes. In Brazil it still retains its religious character and we see it in the State of Minas Gerais. The candombe would have appeared in Uruguay, still in the eighteenth century, from the mixture of the African rhythms brought to the Rio de la Plata by the slaves. From 1750 onwards, with the beginning of the slave trade to Uruguay, then Spanish colony, Montevideo began to receive continuous levies of Africans from various regions, especially East and Equatorial Africa. This influx of slaves made the black population of Montevideo at the beginning of the nineteenth century exceed 50%. The term candombe, in principle, referred generally to the dances practiced by the blacks in Uruguay.
