Ceratandra

Ceratandra is a botanical genus belonging to the family of orchids, or Orchidaceae. It was proposed in 1837 by Bauer, who chose this name from the Greek, keras, corno, and andros, man, in reference to the shape of the fluted helmet presented by the flowers of the type species. It is one of the five genera classified in the suborder Coryciinae and consists of six endemic terrestrial species that exist in marshes or hills on mountain slopes in the Western Cape area of South Africa, whose flowering is stimulated by occasional fires . They are thick-stemmed plants, occasionally bearing small tubers, from which up to four delicate or sturdy stems are less than two feet high, with spaced linear leaves also bearing a rosette of elongated leaves near their end. The inflorescence is terminal with small yellow, orange, white or pink flowers. The dorsal sepal is arranged along the petals, forming a set, the sides open well. The lip has an anchor shape and the column contains two pollen. They bloom in the spring or early summer.
