Coprolalia

Coprolalia

Coprolalia is the unintentional tendency to utter obscene words or make comments generally considered socially derogatory and therefore inadequate. Coprolalia may refer to excrement, genitalia or sexual acts. Coprolalia is a rare feature of people affected by Tourette's syndrome and Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. Coprolalia is a term borrowed from the Greek language (or κόπρος) which means "faeces" (fecal dejections) and λαλία, which means "chatters, meaningless talk". Coprolalia carries all the words and phrases that are considered social taboos or that are considered as unacceptable outside certain contexts. The term coprolalia is not used to describe contextualized curses. Coprolalia is usually expressed outside the social and emotional context. The cadence, tone and level of the voice may be more different from what normally occurs in the person affected by this condition. The verbalization of obscene words in the majority of cases has to do with the psychic-emotional context to which the individual affected by the disorder may be inserted.
