Dublin

Dublin or Dublin is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Ireland. The name in English derives from the Irish word "Dubhlinn" that means "Black Lake". It is located in the province of Leinster near the midpoint of the west coast of Ireland, being cut by the River Liffey and the center of the region of Dublin. Since 1898 he has administrative level of county. Its boundaries are the counties of Fingal to the north, south Dublin to the southwest and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown to the southeast. It has a population of 525,383 inhabitants in the city and its metropolitan area has 1,804,156 inhabitants. Founded as a Viking settlement, it was the center of the Kingdom of Dublin and became the main town on the Island after the Norman invasion. The city grew rapidly during the seventeenth century; it became at that time the second largest city of the British Empire and the fifth largest in Europe. Dublin entered a period of stagnation after the Union Act of 1800, but continued the economic center of the Island. After the Partition of Ireland in 1922, it became the capital of the Irish Free State, and later, the Republic of Ireland.
