The air gap is the term used in magnetic circuits to denote the space between the inductor and the ferromagnetic circuit to which it is coupled. For example in a motor, the gap between the rotor and the stator is called air gap. In an inductor with a ferromagnetic core, the air gap between the windings and the core is called air gap. Although it is unavoidable, the air gap is not always a parasitic feature of the ferromagnetic circuits. For example, in an inducer, increasing the air gap prevents core saturation, and decreases the effect of magnetic hysteresis. On the other hand, it decreases the magnetic permeability. On the other hand, in air motors, the air gap is undesirable, since it forces the creation of a more intense magnetic field, to induce the same power in the rotor.
