Gadolinite

Gadolinita

Gadolinite or gadolinite is a mineral of almost black color with vitreous luster, and consists mainly of silicates of cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, yttrium, beryllium, and iron, with the formula: 2FeBe2Si2O10. It is called gadolinite-Ce or gadolinite-Y, depending on the element that predominates in the variable composition of the mineral. Named in 1800 in honor of Johan Gadolin, a Finnish chemist-mineralogist, who was the first to isolate a yttrium oxide from this mineral in 1792. The chemical element gadolinium was also named in his honor; however the gadolinite contains only traces of gadolinium.
