Geraniol

Geraniol

Geraniol, also called rhodinol, is a monoterpenoid and an alcohol. It is the primary part of rose-oil, palmarosa oil and citronella oil. It also appears in small amounts in geranium, lemon and many other essential oils. It is also a bleach for pale yellow oil, which is insoluble in water but soluble in most common organic solvents. It possesses an odor similar to pink if odor, for which it is used in perfumes. It is also used in flavors such as pear, blackberry, melon, red apple, lime, orange, lemon, watermelon, pineapple and blueberry. Research has evidenced geraniol as an effective insect repellent. On the other hand, it is also produced by olfactory glands of bees to help mark the flowers with nectar and locate the entrances to their hives. In 1994, reports by five major cigarette companies listed geraniol as one of the 599 cigarette additives to enhance their taste. The geraniol-based functional group is called geranyl. It is important in the biosynthesis of terpenes. O grupo funcional baseado no geraniol é chamado geranila. Ele é importante na biossíntese do terpenos.
