Burrowing owl

Coruja-buraqueira

The bureaucratic owl, also called field-buckthorn, field owl, owl-owl, buck-owl, owl-owl, guede, urucura, urucurian and urucuriá, is called "buraqueira" in holes dug in the ground. Although it is capable of digging its own hole, it prefers the abandoned holes of other animals. It is an earthy, day-old owl, although it tends to avoid the midday heat. It occurs from Canada to Tierra del Fuego, as well as in almost all of Brazil, but with the exception of the Amazon. Such birds can measure up to 27 centimeters in length. They live for at least nine years in wild habitat and ten in captivity. It usually places six to twelve eggs. They usually live in fields, pastures, restingas, deserts, plains, beaches and airports. Documented predators of this owl include badgers, snakes and weasels.
