Hamlet is a tragedy of William Shakespeare, written between 1599 and 1601. The play, based in Denmark, recounts the story of how Prince Hamlet tries to avenge the death of his father, Hamlet, the king, executed by his brother Claudius. poisoned and then took the throne by marrying the queen. The play traces a map of the course of life in real madness and feigned madness - from oppressive suffering to fervent rage - and explores themes such as betrayal, revenge, incest, corruption, and morality. Despite the enormous investigation into the text, the exact year that Shakespeare wrote it remains in debate. The first three versions of the play survived our days: these are known as the First Quarter, Second Quarter and First Folio. Each of these has lines or even scenes that are absent from the others. It is believed that Shakespeare wrote Hamlet based on the legend of Amleto, preserved in the thirteenth century by the chronicler Saxo Grammaticus in his Gesta Danorum and later retaken by François de Belleforest in the sixteenth century, and in a supposed piece of the Elizabethan theater known today as Ur -Hamlet.

A peça, situada na Dinamarca, reconta a história de como o Príncipe Hamlet tenta vingar a morte de seu pai, Hamlet, o rei, executado por Cláudio, seu irmão que o envenenou e em seguida tomou o trono casando-se com a rainha. A peça traça um mapa do curso de vida na loucura real e na loucura fingida — do sofrimento opressivo à raiva fervorosa — e explora temas como a traição, vingança, incesto, corrupção e moralidade. Apesar da enorme investigação que se faz acerca do texto, o ano exato em que Shakespeare escreveu-o permanece em debate. Três primeiras versões da peça sobreviveram aos nossos dias: essas são conhecidas como o Primeiro Quarto, o Segundo Quarto e o First Folio. Cada uma dessas possui linhas ou mesmo cenas que estão ausentes nas outras.
