Herzegovina
Herzegovina or Herzegovina is a historical and geographical region of the Western Balkans which together with Bosnia constitutes the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Herzegovina lies in the south-east of the country Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the Dinaric Alps, near the border with Croatia and Montenegro. The area of Herzegovina is between 9,948 km² and 10,190 km², according to different sources. Herzegovina never gained autonomy, always remaining as a region of Bosnia or the state that subjugated it. However, because of political agreements of the nineteenth century, it was decided that the region of Herzegovina should always be mentioned in the name of Bosnia, which gave rise to the name "Bosnia and Herzegovina". In the 1991 census, the population of Herzegovina was quantified at 437,095 inhabitants. The ethnic composition of the population was as follows: 206.457 were Croats, 112,948 Bosnians, 93,047 Serbs, 18,494 Yugoslavs and 6,149 were registered as 'others'. The terrain of Herzegovina is mountainous, karst except for the central valley of the river Neretva. The largest city is Mostar, in the center. Other major cities are Trebinje, Konjic and Čapljina.
