HESS is a state-of-the-art IACT telescope system of cosmic gamma ray analysis of the energy range between 100 GeV and TeV. The acronym was chosen in honor of Victor Hess, the first scientist to study cosmic rays. The name also emphasizes the two main peculiarities of this installation, namely the simultaneous observation of these phenomena through several telescopes, at different angles, and the combination of them in a large system in order to increase the area of ​​effective detection of gamma rays. The HESS allows to explore sources of gamma rays of intensities at the level of a few thousandths of the flow of the Crab Nebula. Located in Namibia, near Gamsberg - an area famous for its excellent optical quality - it had its first Phase I telescope started in the summer of 2002; the following year, in December, all the four telescopes that currently make up this structure were already operational. As early as 2004, HESS became the first IACT experiment to spatially solve a cosmic gamma ray source.

HESS é um sistema de última geração de telescópios IACT de análise de raios gama cósmicos do intervalo de energia entre os 100 GeV e TeV. O acrónimo foi escolhido em homenagem a Victor Hess, o primeiro cientista a estudar os raios cósmicos. O nome enfatiza também as duas peculiaridades principais desta instalação, nomeadamente a observação em simultâneo destes fenómenos através de vários telescópios, em ângulos diferentes, e a combinação dos mesmos num grande sistema por forma a aumentar a área de detecção efectiva dos raios gama. O HESS permite explorar fontes de raios gama de intensidades ao nível de alguns milésimos do fluxo da Nebulosa do Caranguejo. Localizado na Namíbia, perto de Gamsberg — uma área famosa pela excelente qualidade óptica que proporciona — teve o seu primeiro telescópio da Fase I iniciado no Verão de 2002; no ano seguinte, em Dezembro, estavam já operacionais todos os quatro telescópios que compõem actualmente esta estrutura. Já em 2004, o HESS torna-se na primeira experiência IACT a resolver espacialmente uma fonte de raios gama cósmicos.
