Intermezzo

Intermezzo

An Interlude in music, is musical symbol between two acts, in the case of operas with number of acts even; or between two scenes of the same act, in the case of operas with a number of odd acts. Frequently it is characterized by a small composition, generally for organ and of improvisational character, that occurs between different musical pieces like hymn, psalm or cantata. In the case of the piece being orchestral, the interlude appears to fill the interval between two acts. Examples of opera with intermezzo are: Carmen, by Bizet; Manon Lescaut, by Puccini; Cavalleria Rusticana, by Mascagni; and Daphnis et Chloé by Maurice Ravel.
