Laguna is a geomorphological term referring to a depression formed by brackish or salty water, located on the coastal border, communicating with the sea through a channel, constituting a kind of "semi-lake". In general, lagoons form in the oceanic mouth of rivers, which, through interaction with wind and wave mechanics, generate sediment bars that evolve into increasingly larger sandy spurs, isolating much calmer brackish waters from the ocean. In Brazil, this system can evolve to the point where, with an increasingly voluminous accumulation of sediments, it generates - through the bottleneck of the passages - lagoon systems connected only by the water table.

Laguna é um termo que em geomorfologia refere-se a uma depressão formada por água salobra ou de salgada, localizada na borda litorânea, comunicando-se com o mar através de canal, constituindo assim, uma espécie de "semi-lago". Em geral, as lagunas se formam na foz oceânica de rios que, pela interação com a mecânica do vento e das ondas, geram barras de sedimentos que evoluem para esporões arenosos cada vez maiores, isolando da violência do oceano águas salobras, muito mais tranquilas. No Brasil, esse sistema pode evoluir a ponto de, com um acúmulo cada vez mais volumoso de sedimentos, gerar — pelo estrangulamento das passagens — sistemas de lagoas conectadas somente pelo lençol freático.
