Mapuches

The Mapuche are an indigenous people of south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina. They are also known as araucanos. The groups located between the Biobío and Toltén rivers managed to successfully resist the Spanish conquistadors in the so-called Arauco War, a series of battles that lasted for 300 years, with long periods of truce. The crown of Spain recognized the autonomy of these territories in 1641, by means of the Treaty of Quilín. After the independence of Chile and Argentina, these territories were invaded by Republican military detachments, the Mapuche population being confined to "reductions" Chile and "indigenous Argentina reserves." Because of this process of territorial despoiling, more than half the Mapuche indigenous population lives the mapuche movement is fighting for the restoration of its ancestral territory, for constitutional changes in favor of indigenous rights and recognition by the states of cultural specificities.
