Ogre

Ogro

The ogre or ogre definition is somewhat vague because it varies greatly from folklore from one country to another and even from one literary work to another in the same country. But he is almost always depicted as a giant or simply as a man larger than normal and brutal in appearance. And it usually feeds on human flesh. Its controversial origin, probably a change from the Latin Orcus, 'infernal deity', or the old German Ögr, 'ugly' or 'very clumsy', seems to make it clear that it is a character of European origin. In mythology, it is almost always portrayed as a monster inhabiting isolated and dingy forests. In children's literature, a famous ogre is the fairy tale The Little Thumb. These creatures have a reduced brain, which justifies their foolish attitudes, lack of discernment and their reduced reasoning ability. One notable exception in drawings is Shrek, the hero of the films that take his name, which is gentle, intelligent and sensitive.
