Arthrodira † Petalichthyida † Phyllolepida † Ptyctodontida † Rhenanida † Acanthothoraci † Pseudopetalichthyida † Stensioellida † The placoderms represent a class of extinct fish, which lived between the Silurian and the late Devonian. Their main feature, which gave them the scientific name of Placodermi, was the covering of the head and thorax by articulated armor of dermal plaques. The rest of the body might or might not be covered with scales. The placoderms were one of the first groups of fish to develop teeth and jaws, which probably evolved from the gill arches. The first paleontologist to study the placoderm group was Louis Agassiz. The oldest fossils of placoderms were found in sedimentary formations of China dating to the end of the Silurian period. These findings already represent well differentiated placoderms of the orders Antiarchi and Arthrodira, reason why the group is supposed to have arisen a little earlier. However, fossils of basal forms of placoderms have never been discovered, nor transitions between this group and a possible precedent.
