The Arithmetic Logic Unit is a digital circuit that performs logical and arithmetic operations. The ULA is a key part of the central processing unit, and even the simplest microprocessors. It is actually a "great electronic calculator" of the type developed during World War II, and its technology was already available when the first modern computers were built. The mathematician John von Neumann proposed the concept of ULA in 1945 when he wrote a report on the fundamentals for a new computer called EDVAC. Research on ULAs is still an important part of computer science. The technology used was initially relays, inheritance of telephony, and later valves, inheritance of the radio. With the emergence of transistors, and after integrated circuits, arithmetic and logic unit circuits are now implemented with semiconductor technology. The ULA performs the main logic and arithmetic operations of the computer. It adds, subtracts, divides, determines whether a number is positive or negative, or if it is zero.
