Adonis

Adonis

Adonis is a complex figure of Greek mythology. Born of Mercy's incestuous love for her father, Cyniras. Adonis's legend best symbolizes the transition to another season. He was born in dramatic circumstances, his mother fleeing to Arabia by her father's curse. There, the gods, affectionate of her situation, metamorphosed her into a shrub called myrtle. At the end of the gestation, the tree was opened, and the nymphs of the forest adopted the child and hid it in the neighboring caves. So he spent all his youth hunting through the forests and arrived at Phenicia where he met Aphrodite, who immediately fell in love with him; to the contempt of the other gods, she left Citera to follow him in the forests of the Lebanese mountains. Apollo saw them and informed Ares. This, jealous, started in their pursuit. Artemis, watching over the lovers, prevented Aphrodite, who, worried, wanted to prevent Adonis from leaving to go to hunt.

Definition of adonis in the Romanian dictionary

Adonis, young beautiful, beloved by Aphrodite. He was born of Myrrha's incestuous love for her father, Cinyras. Overwhelmed by shame, Myrrha hid in the woods and was transformed by Aphrodite, to whom she pity herself in a tree. Ten months later, Adonis was born from a notch made in the bark of the tree. Amazed by the beauty of her child, Aphrodite takes it under her protection. Later she entrusts Persephone to raise it. At the fulfillment of the established term, Persephone does not want to return it again. Then the two goddesses resort to the judgment of Zeus. His decision is the following: four months of the year Adonis would spend underground at Persephone, four months on earth with Aphrodite, and the other four where he will. Growing up, Adonis stays eight months near Aphrodite, and only months past Persephone. After another version, the love of Aphrodite for Adonis awakens the jealousy of Ares. In a hunt, the god of war assembled on Adonis a boar that torn him. There are several legends about the death of the beautiful young man. After one, Aphrodite, grieving, shed so many tears, how many drops of blood flowed from his body. Her tears have turned into so many flowers: the anemones. After another legend, running in the help of the injured young man, Aphrodite would have stamped his feet in the roots of the roses. Her blood, sprinkling their immaculate white so far, gave them the rose color. The cult of Adonis was of Phoenician origin: he symbolized, among other things, the death of nature during the winter and its resurrection to life in spring.
