Meaning of "bátă" in the Romanian dictionary

DICTIONARY

ETYMOLOGY OF THE WORD BÁTĂ

bátă (béte), s. f.1. Cingătoare, cordon, brîu. 2. Betelie. – Megl. bętă „ciorap, șosetă”. Lat. vĭtta (Candrea, Éléments, 13; Pușcariu 193; REW 9404; Candrea-Dens., 143; DAR); cf. sicil. vitta, it. vita „brîu”, v. fr. vete, cat., sp., port. beta „sfoară, funie”. Der. betelie, s. f. (betelie), al cărui suf. nu este clar (cf. totuși, bătălie, tocălie, țăcălie). Scriban îl relaționează cu rom. bretele, fr. bretelles; ipoteza sa este improbabilă, dat fiind sensul cu totul specializat de betelie, și pare a se baza pe o confuzie cu bertelie.

Etymology is the study of the origin of words and their changes in structure and significance.
