DAR îl pune în legătură cu mag. dialectal tömpe „prost”, dar cuvîntul rom. este prea răspîndit pentru ca să i se poată atribui această origine (nu este sigură observația din DAR că se folosește numai în Mold., Bucov. și Trans. de Nord. Scriban propune rus.temnyĭ „obscur” (pronunțat tjomnyĭ). – Der.chiombăni (var.chiompăni), vb. (a lucra la lumină slabă, a-și strica ochii; a desluși cu greutate); chimbăneală,s. f. (lucru făcut în condiții proaste de luminozitate); chiombies. f. (miopie). – Cf.chiondorîș.
