Lat. volvĕre (Tiktin; DAR; Pascu, I, 188; Candrea; Scriban); cu o alterare care nu a fost suficient explicată; cf. volbură. Ar putea fi și o creație expresivă, paralelă cu bulb(uc)a. Așa cum este holboacă față de bolboacă și holboană față de bolboană.Der. holban, s. m. (persoană care se lasă surprinsă cu ușurință); ghiolbană, s. f. (femeie cu ochii mari).
