Var. se folosește curent cu sensul de „doamnă”, dar nu a fost admisă în limba literară. – Der. mădămi, vb. (a trata ca pe o doamnă; refl., a o face pe doamna). Pentru mr., cf. ngr. μαντάμα, tc. madama.
