Var. iortoman, hartoman. Origine necunoscută, dar probabil, expresivă, după cum o arată
suf. -
man, cf. gogoman, hoțoman etc. Ar putea fi doar
var. lui
lotroman „hoț”, caz în care ar avea semantismul lui
hoț „viclean, șiret”. Ideea sau, în cazul lui, proveniența primei părți a cuvîntului nu a fost descoperită pînă acum. Totuși ipotezele abundă: cuvînt dacic (Hasdeu,
Col. lui Traian, 1873, 85) sau din zend.
