Bentonite is a natural clay mineral, which has the property of swelling during hydration. When space is limited for free swelling in the presence of water, a dense gel forms, which prevents further penetration of moisture. This property, as well as its non-toxicity and chemical resistance makes it indispensable in production, construction and many other areas of activity. Natural bedding bentonites usually have a pH of 6-9.5 and contain less than 2% sodium carbonate; the total content of interchangeable sodium and calcium does not exceed 80 me / 100 g.

При ограничении пространства для свободного разбухания в присутствии воды образуется плотный гель, который препятствует дальнейшему проникновению влаги. Это свойство, а также нетоксичность и химическая стойкость делает его незаменимым в производстве, строительстве и многих других сферах деятельности. Природные залегающие бентониты обычно имеют рН 6—9,5 и содержат менее 2 % карбоната натрия; общее содержание взаимозаменяемых натрия и кальция не превышает 80 мэ/100 г.
