Chloroform
Chloroform is a chemical substance that has an anesthetic effect. The chemical formula is CHCl3, also called trichloromethane. It is a heavy, colorless liquid and boils at 61 ° C. Its density is 1.48 g / cm³. It evaporates easily. It dissolves the oils. It is widely used in chemical processes. It was first discovered by Justus Liebig in 1831 and first anesthetically used by James Simpson in England in 1848. It is a colorless, sweet-smelling liquid and not flammable. The anesthetic effect is stronger than diethyl ether 5 times, but the toxic effect is also high. In the presence of a flame, it becomes a toxic gas, fosgene. It is used at low concentrations due to its high drug effect. There is no big difference between lethal dose and drug dose. Chloroform also has effects such as lowering blood pressure, disrupting heart rhythm, and damaging skin and mucous membranes. Using chloroform for a long time can cause coma or even death. Especially harmful side effects on the heart and liver. For this reason it is rarely used as an anesthetic in humans.
