With the help of lexicology, lexicography or lexicography, the arrangement, compilation or writing of dictionaries, or the name given to it, theoretically lexicology examines the sequential and pragmatic relations of words in a linguistic dictionary, develops theories or information about each other in dictionaries, is a scientific discipline that organizes the information needed by users and adds them to printed or electronic dictionaries so that they can be accessed by users. Sometimes this science can be called "metalexcognition". Also, those who deal with this science are called "lexicographers" or "lexicologists" or "lexicographers". Lexicologists or lexicographers generally design, compile, use, and evaluate the use of dictionaries for the identification of a language. Such dictionaries are called generic dictionaries or LGP dictionaries.

Sözlükbilim, Leksikografi veya Sözlükçülük, sözlüklerin düzenlenmesi, derlenmesi veya yazılması işine veya bu sanata verilen isim olmakla birlikte, teorik olarak sözlükbilim bir dil sözlüğündeki kelimelerin dizilimsel ve pragmatik ilişkilerini inceleyen, sözlüklerde birbirleri ile ilgili bilgilerin veya bileşenlerin ya da yapıların teorilerini geliştiren, belirli durumlar için kullanıcılar tarafından ihtiyaç duyulan bilgileri düzenleyen ve basılı veya elektronik sözlüklere veri ekleyerek kullanıcılar tarafından erişilmesini sağlayan, tüm bunları semantik açıdan açıklayarak bilimsel olarak tarif eden bir bilim dalıdır. Bazen bu bilim dalı "metaleksikografi" olarak ta isimlendirilebilir. Ayrıca bu bilim ile uğraşan kişilere de "leksikograf" veya "sözlükbilimci" ya da "sözlükçü" adı verilir. Sözlükbilimciler veya leksikograflar, genel olarak bir dilin tanımlanmasına yarayan sözlüklerin tasarımını, derlemesini, kullanımının nasıl olacağını ve tüm bunların değerlendirmesini yaparlar. Bu tür sözlüklere genel sözlük veya LGP sözlüğü adı verilir.
