Poster or poster According to the definition of Turkish Language Institution; is usually defined as "a wall hanging on the side where the crowd can see, usually a picture, prepared to announce or promote something". It is used to posters, advertisements or propaganda, to announce a game, exhibition, product and so on. It is also a branch in fine arts. Poster art is the 19th century. with two main elements coming together at the beginning; on the one hand, text and image integration, multiplication, on the other hand, the development of the banner, the mass production of consumer goods, and the progress of the economy based on the economy, thanks to lithography. In the beginning, it was small in size, and the poster, resembling book pictures and press bulletins, formed its own aesthetic with modern art. It is the basic concept of a short and striking text, plain and artwork. Artists such as Manet, Gavarni, Daumier and Toulouse Lautrec have contributed significantly to the development of the poster. Different aspects of poster art were born in various countries of Europe and America.

Afiş veya poster Türk Dil Kurumu'nun tanımına göre; "bir şeyi duyurmak veya tanıtmak için hazırlanan, kalabalığın görebileceği yere asılmış, genellikle resimli duvar ilanı, ası" şeklinde tanımlanmaktadır. Afiş, reklam ya da propaganda yapmak, bir oyun, sergi, ürün ve benzerlerinin duyurulmasında kullanılır. Aynı zamanda güzel sanatlarda bir daldır. Afiş sanatı 19. yy. başında iki ana unsurun bir araya gelmesiyle ortaya çıktı; bir yandan taşbaskı sayesinde metin ve resmin birleşmesi, çoğaltılabilir olması, diğer yandan afişin gelişmesi, tüketim mallarının toplu üretiminin ve rekabete dayalı ekonominin ilerlemesine bağlı kaldı. Başlarda küçük boyutlu olup, kitap resimlerini, basın bültenlerini andıran afiş, modern sanat anlayışıyla beraber kendi estetiğini oluşturdu. Kısa ve çarpıcı bir metnin, sade ve resimle beraberliği afişin temel kavramıdır. Manet, Gavarni, Daumier, Toulouse Lautrec gibi sanatçılar, afişin gelişmesine önemli katkılarda bulundular. Avrupa'nın çeşitli ülkelerinde ve Amerika'da afiş sanatına farklı bakış açıları doğdu.
