In general, when it is called ether, pain relievers are the first to come to mind. Along with this, however, it is also used for ignition in internal combustion engines. Ethers are organic molecules in which two organic moieties are linked via an oxygen atom. The general formula of the ethers is R-O-R '. R and R \u0026 apos; may be the same or different organic moieties. The ethers are isomers with alcohols of the same carbon number. Even if all ethers have an alcohol isomer, all alcohols have no ether isomer. The reason is that the smallest ether has two carbons. Boiling points are lower than alcohols which are isomers of ethers. This means that there is no hydrogen bond between the molecules. The ethers form homologous sequences and can not be oxidized. By removing 1 mole of water from 2 moles of mono-alcohol, symmetrical ether is obtained. The angle between the bonds of oxygen with the organic parts is a little bigger than that with hydrogen in the water molecule.

Genel itibarıyla eter denildiği zaman ilk akla gelen ağrı kesiciler olmaktadır. Yalnız eter bunun yanı sıra aynı zamanda içten yanmalı motorlarda ateşlemede kullanılmaktadır. Eterler, iki organik kısmın bir oksijen atomu üzerinden birbirine bağ yapmış organik moleküllerdir. Eterlerin genel formülü R-O-R’ şeklindedir. Buradaki R ve R’ aynı olabileceği gibi farklı organik kısımlar da olabilirler. Eterler, aynı karbon sayılı alkoller ile izomerdir. Bütün eterlerin alkol izomeri varsa da bütün alkollerin eter izomeri yoktur. Bunun nedeni de en küçük eterin iki karbonlu olmasıdır. Eterlerin izomeri olan alkollere göre kaynama noktaları daha düşüktür. Bu da molekülleri arasında hidrojen bağı bulunmamamsıdır. Eterler homolog sıra oluştururlar ve yükseltgenemezler. 2 mol mono alkolden 1 mol su çekilmesi ile simetrik eter elde edilir. Oksijenin organik kısımlarla yaptığı bağların arasındaki açı, su molekülünde hidrojenle yaptığı açıdan biraz daha büyüktür.
