The Sultan is an Islamic adjective that has been used in many different meanings in history. It comes in the words "power", "authority", "manager". It is often used by Islamic rulers who proclaim their independence. In the Islamic states, the title given to the monarchy. "Sultan, hakan, inn, ruler" means. Sultan is a title of the Sunni part of the Muslim rulers. The word is taken from Arabic and is a proprietor of power. The latter were also taken to mean dominance, evidence, and bourgeois. Genelde bağımsızlığını ilan eden İslam hükümdarları tarafından kullanılmıştır. İslâm devletlerinde, hükümdara verilen unvan. “Padişah, hakan, han, hükümdar” anlamlarındadır. Sultan tabiri, Müslüman hükümdarlarının özellikle Sünnî kısmına ait bir unvandır. Sözcük, Arapça'dan alınmış olup, iktidar sahibi demektir. Daha sonraları, hakimiyet, delil ve bürhan manâsına da alınmıştır. Sultan unvanını ilk defa 2. asrın ilk yıllarında, Gazne’de hükümdar bulunan Mahmud İbn-il Emir Sebüktekin kullandı. Hilâfet, Emevî ve Abbasî sultanlarında bulunduğundan, bunlara mecazen halife, diğer büyük İslâm devletlerinin emirlerine, hükümdarlarına sultan denildi. Sultanlık, Gazneliler'den, Selçuklular'a ve onlardan da Osmanlılar'a geçti. Selçuklu Sultanı Tuğrul Bey'e, Abbasî hilâfet merkezini, Şiî Büveyhoğullarının baskısından kurtardığından Abbasi halifesi tarafından "Karaların ve Denizlerin Sultanı" unvanı verilmişti.
