Ethnic township is a kind of grassroots regional autonomy of the mainland of the People's Republic of China. It belongs to the township administrative division unit, that is, the administrative status is the same as that of "township". The Constitution of the People's Republic of China and the Law on Regional National Autonomy stipulate that because of the small size of the ethnic minorities, the population is less and scattered, it is not appropriate to establish a "national township" approach in national autonomous areas. "National Township Administrative Work Regulations" specifically protect the implementation of the national township system. As of 2007, there were 1,093 national townships in mainland China. Except for Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hainan, Ningxia and Shanghai, ethnic townships were not established. Ethnic townships are the largest provincial administrative regions for Guizhou and Yunnan, reaching 252 and 150 respectively, followed by Sichuan and Hunan, reaching 98 and 97 respectively. ...
