Antarctica
Antarctica is the southernmost part of the earth, on the continent of the Antarctic. It is located in the southern hemisphere Antarctic, almost all continents in the south of the Antarctic Circle, surrounded by the Arctic Ocean. Antarctic land area of about 14 million square kilometers (5.4 million square miles), is the world's fifth continent, followed by Asia, Africa, North America and South America. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice and has an average ice thickness of 1,600 m (1.0 mph). Antarctica is the most cold, dry, windy continent on Earth, and has the highest average elevation. Its coastal and non-inland areas have annual rainfall of only 200 mm (8 inches) and are therefore considered indifferent. The natural environment is harsh and there are thousands of people living in sporadic observatories on the mainland for the whole year.
