The Xi'an Incident (also known as the Double Twelve Incident) was a military coup in the period of the Nationalist government of the Republic of China. Xi'an Incident, also known as "Twelve Incident." In 1936, Japanese imperialism expanded its aggression on China. Chiang Kai-shek insisted on not resisting the policy and continued the civil war. The Northeast Army headed by Chang Hsueh-liang and Chiang Kai-shek, headed by Zhang Hsiang-liang and led by Yang Hucheng, were all aware of the "suppression of the communists" and their failure to find a way out. They achieved an armistice with the Red Army and demanded that Chiang Kai-shek resist the Japanese invasion. December 4 the same year, Chiang Kai-shek to Xi'an. Zhang and Yang decided to "remonstrate soldiers" when they repeated their remarks to Jiang and invalidated them. On the 12th, they launched the Xi'an Incident, detained Chiang Kai-shek in Lvqing Huaqingchi and electrified the whole country. They proposed that they should restructure the Nanjing National Government, stop the civil war and jointly fight Japan. On the 16th, the Chinese Communist Party should urge Zhang and Yang to send Zhou Enlai, Qin Bangxian and Ye Jianying to Xi'an to mediate and fight for Chiang Kai-shek's resistance to Japan. After many weeks of hard work by Zhou Enlai, Jiang was forced to stop accepting the "suppression of the Communists" on 24 January and jointly with the Red Army for resisting Japan and other conditions. On the 25th, Chiang was released back to Nanjing with Zhang Hsueh-liang. The peaceful resolution of the Xi'an Incident played an extremely important role in promoting the second cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party and in nationwide resistance. 西安事变 亦称“双十二事变”。1936年,日本帝国主义不断扩大对中国的侵略,蒋介石坚持不抵抗政策,继续进行内战。被蒋调到陕甘一带进攻红军的以张学良为首的东北军和以杨虎城为首的十七路军认识到“剿共”没有出路,与红军实现了停战,并要求蒋联共抗日。同年12月4日,蒋到西安督战。张、杨在向蒋屡次进谏无效后决定“兵谏”,于12日发动了西安事变,在临潼华清池扣留蒋介石,并通电全国,提出改组南京国民政府、停止内战、共同抗日等八项主张。16日,中国共产党应张、杨电请,派周恩来、秦邦宪、叶剑英到西安调停,争取蒋介石抗日。经过周恩来等多方面的耐心工作,迫使蒋于24日接受停止“剿共”、联合红军抗日等条件。25日,蒋在张学良陪同下被释放回南京。西安事变的和平解决,对推动国共两党第二次合作和全国抗日起了极为重要的作用。
