Saponin is a class of glycosides of the triterpenoid or spiro-steroid compounds, mainly distributed in terrestrial vascular plants and also in marine organisms such as starfish and sea cucumbers. Many of the main active ingredients of Chinese herbal medicines such as ginseng, Polygalaceae, Campanulaceae, Licorice, Anemarrhena and Bupleurum contain saponins.
