La flotación es un proceso de separación físico-química para sólidos de grano fino debido a la diferente humectabilidad superficial de las partículas. Al hacerlo, se utiliza el hecho de que las burbujas de gas pueden volverse fácilmente hidrófobas, h. Los cuales son difíciles de mojar por el agua y que dan a las partículas la flotabilidad para que floten. El requisito previo es que el gas utilizado se disuelva en agua. En estas condiciones, las burbujas de gas igualmente hidrófobas se acumulan sobre las superficies de partıculas hidrófobas. El proceso se utiliza, por ejemplo, en la minería como un método de procesamiento para separar los minerales y el gas en una suspensión acuosa. Ha reemplazado la eliminación tradicional de lodos en la mayoría de los campos de aplicación. La flotación no pertenece, como se suele suponer erróneamente, a los procesos de separación debido a la densidad. Por definición, de acuerdo con VDMA 24430 es un proceso de separación, en el que transporta dispersa en agua o sustancias en suspensión mediante la adhesión burbujas de gas a la superficie y no eliminan con un escariador.
