El flogisto es una sustancia hipotética, de la cual se asumió a finales del siglo XVII y XVIII que escapó de todos los cuerpos combustibles durante la combustión y penetró en él cuando se calentó. La teoría de la flogiston fue importante en la interpretación de los procesos de reducción y oxidación, como el potencial diferente de los diferentes compuestos. En el siglo XVIII se produjeron las primeras refutaciones y se empezó a describir y cuantificar el papel del oxígeno en los procesos de combustión. La teoría de la flogistontía, por lo tanto, se cuenta entre los errores científicos, más precisamente, sería descrita como un paradigma en el sentido de Thomas S. Kuhn, como lo hizo él mismo en su libro La estructura de las revoluciones científicas. La teoría de la logogénesis fue menos importante en los procesos cuantitativos que el potencial redox de las sustancias involucradas.
