En la física de semiconductores, un aceptor es un átomo dopante que cuando se añade a un semiconductor puede formar una región de tipo p. El átomo de boro actúa como aceptor en la red de silicio 2D simplificada. Por ejemplo, cuando el silicio, que tiene cuatro electrones de valencia, necesita ser dopado como un semiconductor de tipo p, se pueden usar elementos del grupo III como boro o aluminio, que tienen tres electrones de valencia. Estos últimos elementos también se denominan impurezas trivalentes. Otros dopantes trivalentes incluyen indio y galio. Al sustituir un átomo de Si en la red cristalina, los tres electrones de valencia del boro forman enlaces covalentes con tres de los vecinos Si, pero el enlace con el cuarto vecino permanece insatisfecho. El enlace insatisfecho atrae electrones de los enlaces vecinos. A temperatura ambiente, un electrón de un enlace vecino saltará para reparar el enlace insatisfecho dejando así un agujero. In semiconductor physics, an acceptor is a dopant atom that when added to a semiconductor can form a p-type region. Boron atom acting as an acceptor in the simplified 2D Silicon lattice. For example, when silicon, having four valence electrons, needs to be doped as a p-type semiconductor, elements from group III like boron or aluminium, having three valence electrons, can be used. The latter elements are also called trivalent impurities. Other trivalent dopants include indium and gallium. When substituting for a Si atom in the crystal lattice, the three valence electrons of boron form covalent bonds with three of the Si neighbours but the bond with the fourth neighbour remains unsatisfied. The unsatisfied bond attracts electrons from the neighbouring bonds. At room temperature, an electron from a neighbouring bond will jump to repair the unsatisfied bond thus leaving a hole. The hole will again attract an electron from the neighbouring bond to repair this unsatisfied bond. This chain-like process results in the hole moving around the crystal and able to carry a current thus acting as a charge carrier.
