Aedes
Aedes es un género de mosquitos originalmente encontrados en las zonas tropicales y subtropicales, pero ahora se encuentra en todos los continentes excepto la Antártida. Algunas especies han sido propagadas por la actividad humana. Aedes albopictus, una de las especies más invasivas, se extendió recientemente al Nuevo Mundo, incluyendo a los Estados Unidos, por el comercio de neumáticos usados. Primero descrito y nombrado por Meigen en 1818, el nombre genérico proviene del griego antiguo ἀηδής, aēdēs, que significa "desagradable" u "odioso".
